Difference between ON-RAILS and FREE ROAM video games?

Joan Stavropoulos: On-Rails means that you follow a path of the story to pass the game. Example of game is: Star Fox games were you can only go forward.Free Roam is were you can go any were and ignore the main plot if you chose to. Example of Game: Oblivion, all the GTA games among others.

Salvatore Walls: Free roam is a game genre that pretty much gives you the option to go anywhere you want in the game. You don't necessarily need to go one way like in Mario Bros and don't really have to do story missions if u dont want to. One example of a free roam game is Grand theft auto 4 or any of the grand theft auto games. Another free roam game is saints row, crackdown, fable 2. an on rails game is space invaders or geometry wars

Delmer Pectol: On rails is a competley scrpipted game like cod other than picking your weapons you have no freedom really other than in multiplayer. A free roam game is like oblivion fallout3 and fable 2 they are all really good at let you do things other than the main quest like do other quest just walk around and do what you want. Other free roamers are like GTA and saints row 2 also really good. I think that free roam are better though.
