what's the difference beetween laundry detergent a fabric softener?

Marquetta Gimm: Laundry detergent (also called "soap") loosens soils from the fabric through the action of the water being forced through the fabric (the agitation of a top loader or the tumbling of a front loader accomplishes this). Fabric softener contains chemicals that cling to the fabric to make it feel softer (less stiff) and minimize static cling. There is no soap in the fabric softener. However, just the agitation of the clothes in the water may have removed a lot of the soils that were in the clothes. But, they certainly won't get as clean as if you used detergent....Show more

Nedra Oltz: You use laundry detergent to clean your clothes , you use fabric softener to make it soft. You put the laundry detergent in the washer with your clothes and put the fabric softener in the center piece and it will be released on its own or you can buy the fabric ball , there's many forms and brands of fabric softener.

Karie Mavle: Fabric softener is for softening the ! fabric fibres and reducing static cling. It has no cleaning effect. Detergents actually surround 'dirt' particles (including bacteria, oils, soils, dust, food material, etc). The clothes may be cleaner from being rinsed by the water but are definately not clean, especially if you mixed bacteria heavy items (towels, underwear, socks, etc) in with other stuff....Show more
