What is better: Tivo or DirecTv DVR? Why?

Lynn Mctier: get the directv HD dvr system and ask for an upgrade on your sat. dish you probably have a triple sat dish wich has 3 LNB those are the white theings at the end of the dish ask for a Ka/Ku dish much better quality down side bigger. everyone is going to need that dish also i live in los angeles and most areas over here are getting upgraded already

Logan Bero: Hi haftl31,I prefer TiVO because of simplicity of use. We love them. Their schedule is always correct because it is updated every day. I can program TiVO to record from out of town over the Internet. TiVO learns what you like and recommends shows that you might like. Often times we never would have known they were on. You can program an entire season of a given series with a single click and TiVO never forgets. You can tell TiVO you like someone or something and it will locate shows for you. For example if you tell it you like John Wayne it will watch for and record anything he is on.I could go on a! nd on about TiVO. There is one downside and that is the monthly (you can pay yearly if you want) fee.To learn all about TiVO check their web site here - https://www3.tivo.comCheck the TiVO user forum here - http://www.tivocommunity.comI hope this helps you make the best decision.Norm...Show more

Virgilio Echter: Yes you are missing alot of functions from a Tivo to a DirecTV DVR. Here is a link that compares Tivo to plain DVR's. http://video.on.nytimes.com/?fr_story=aca692e3de14...Also with a Tivo you can connect it to your wired or wireless home network so you can access the Tivo over the internet, transfer the shows/movies over the homes wired/wireless network so you can edit and burn to DVD, schedule shows over the internet so your Tivo will record the shows in case you are not at home.I have and have had DirecTV for over 7 years now. I have the DirecTV Tivo's (A totla of 5 D Tivo's) and was able to modify them all to do most of what a Tivo can do. The software is b! asically the same as your Tivo Unit. I have ALL units connecte! d to my wired/wireless network and have MultiRoom Viewing and Home Media Option on ALL. This is NOT possible with a DirecTV CVR. Unfortunately DirecTV just got away from working with Tivo for the DVR service to start selling their own models. Their models have been having alot of issues and was most likely rushed into on their part too quickly. If you decide you want Most of the functionality of your Tivo you can still purchase and use DirecTV Tivo's with DirecTV, they just do NOT sell them any more. There are places to buy them though. Check out http://www.weaknees.comhttp://www.dvrupgrade.comor EbayJust FYI, almost all other Cable or Satellite companies DVR's STILL do NOT have the functionality of a Tivo. Unless you are solely using your Tivo as a VCR functions then I would Stick with Tivo. Also most Tivo's when they go bad it is caused by the Hard drive, most Tivo's can be fixed fairly cheaply. If it is a Hard drive issue you can either purchase a NEW LARGER hard drive ! from http://www.dvrupgrade.com or purchase your own NEW LARGER hard drive and use their InstantCake software and PTVnet to rebuild your OLD Tivo. Especially if this is a Series2 Tivo I woulld go this route..I hope this helps you figure things out. If you have any more questions please feel free to send me an email.....Show more
